Tennessee
World Affairs Council -- Global grok
|
grok
(pronounced GRAHK)
To grok something is to understand
something so well that it is fully
absorbed into oneself. In Robert
Heinlein's science-fiction novel of
1961, Stranger in a Strange Land, the
word is Martian and literally means "to
drink" but metaphorically means "to take
it all in," to understand fully, or to
"be at one with." Today, grok sometimes
is used to include acceptance as well as
comprehension - to "dig" or appreciate
as well as to know. [source] |
The
TN WAC Global Grok is an informal gathering of
members, prospective members and those in the
general public who have an interest in gaining a
better understanding of world affairs. These
gatherings can take a variety of forms and take
place in a variety of venues. For example a
Global Grok could be a Saturday evening at the TN
WAC office with a group of people reviewing a
documentary film or a television special and,
afterward, discussing it and its relevance to
current global developments. Another Global
Grok could be a mini-Academic WorldQuest trivia
contest in a coffee house. We welcome
suggestions on where, when and how to Grok
something.
Global Grok-ings will be announced through our
web site home page,
our
calendar and our "What's
New" section. Also, if you are a
member --
please join TN WAC
-- you will be notified of upcoming events such as
Global Grok sessions.
You
may learn more about the more remarkable Global Grok
sessions by
checking the TN WAC
press releases index.
We
encourage you to
contact the Tennessee World
Affairs Council to be a part of our
Global Grok effort.
PROGRAMS
The
programs of the Tennessee World Affairs Council can
be roughly divided between those developed for
community groups, town hall meetings and so forth,
and those appropriate for educational outreach in
our schools. However, some programs, like the
distinguished visiting speaker program, are
appropriate for all audiences.
Your feedback and participation will be greatly
appreciated as we work to bring these programs to
our community and schools. For more
