Tennessee
World Affairs Council -- Town Hall Meetings
Town
meetings traditionally focused on matters of local
governance. In the Middle Ages town meetings
in Northern Spain's Basque region were called "anteiglesia"
-- meaning "in front of the church." Residents
would vote on issues at the doors to the local
church and choose representatives to district
assemblies. The practice continues
in modern times, especially in the New England
region, where some municipalities assemble citizens
once a year to serve as legislative bodies, acting
on budgets, local ordinances, and other matters.
An
offshoot of traditional town meetings -- the
expression of democratic assembly -- is the town
hall meeting. These can be a forum where, by
open invitation, concerned citizens get together to
listen to speakers talk about issues of the day and
everyone gets the opportunity to share their
opinions. This is the model for Tennessee
World Affairs Council Town Hall Meetings -- an
opportunity for our community to get together to
learn, generally in connection with our
distinguished visitor program, and to share opinions
on important global issues.
TN
WAC Town Hall Meetings will be held in various
communities, usually in connection with our
community partners (i.e. universities, high schools,
businesses, etc.). Town Hall Meetings will be
announced through our
web site home page,
our
calendar and our "What's
New" section. Also, if you are a
member --
please join TN WAC
-- you will be notified of upcoming events such as
Town Hall Meetings.
Please
contact us if you
have suggestions or questions about the Town Hall
Meeting program.
You
can learn more about our past Town Hall Meetings by

press releases index.
PROGRAMS
The
programs of the Tennessee World Affairs Council can
be roughly divided between those developed for
community groups, town hall meetings and so forth,
and those appropriate for educational outreach in
our schools. However, some programs, like the
distinguished visiting speaker program, are
appropriate for all audiences.
Your feedback and participation will be greatly
appreciated as we work to bring these programs to
our community and schools. For more
