SUMMER 2008 - WASHINGTON, DC

JULY 8-11, 2008

The Tennessee World Affairs Council is pleased to announce a teachers workshop in Washington, DC this summer on the topic of Persia offered through the World Affairs Councils of America.

Details are covered in the announcement from WACA as posted below.

You can see what you need to apply and given the short span of time permitted before the deadline we strongly suggest you contact TN WAC directly to discuss submission of your application.

DO NOT SEND AN APPLICATION DIRECTLY TO WACA - ALL APPLICATIONS MUST BE ENDORSED BY TN WAC.

The information below is provided from WACA:

Teacher Workshop on Persia

The WACA is pleased to announce a teacher workshop on Persia for July 8 - 11, 2008 in Washington, DC.  This exclusive workshop will offer 20 teachers the opportunity to meet with State Department officials, academics, and other Persian experts in an intimate setting to gain a comprehensive understanding of Persia's politics and culture.

The workshop will begin on the evening of July 8 and continue through lunch on July 11.  Thanks to a generous grant from the Public Affairs Alliance of Iranian Americans (PAAIA), the only cost to the participants is the cost of their transportation to Washington, DC.

Teachers who participated in our two previous workshops on the European Union and Africa called the experience the best workshop they had attended.  The combination of the small group and setting in Washington, DC means that participants have an opportunity to engage with our experts and each other in a way that is not possible with larger groups.
Who Can Apply & Criteria

This workshop opportunity is open to any high school teacher, department head, or administrator.  The PAAIA and WACA encourage applicants who will work with their school and local World Affairs Council to do follow-up activities for educators and students.

The educator does not necessarily need to be a social studies teacher.  The workshop is open to all who would benefit from a broader look at Persia.
Applications

Applications are due to WACA by the end of the day on April 10, 2008.  We anticipate letting applicants know their status after April 15.

There are three parts to the applications:

1) A one page letter of intent from the applicant explaining why this workshop will benefit them and what they intend to do with the information they learned working with other educators

2) A current resume

3) A letter of recommendation from the applicant's local WAC that describes how the council and educator can work together to plan follow - up activities.
